HM Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire James Saunders Watson Esq officially reopened the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 10 July 2021 with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The museum on Guildhall Road opened its doors to the public at 10 a.m. after an extensive £ 6.7 million expansion and renovation program that began in 2017 that has doubled the building with a nine-meter-high glass atrium extension that connects the original building with brand new galleries and activity rooms.

The first visitors through the doors were seven-year-old Molly and her father Nick, who had his first date with Molly’s mother at the museum in 2006.

Visitors were able to enjoy the brand new Shoe Gallery, showcasing Northampton’s internationally renowned shoe collection and Northampton’s shoemaking legacy, as well as a first look at several new exhibitions and galleries, including We Are Northampton, the Chris Fiddes Retrospective and Two Meters Apart, an immersive one Exhibition documenting life through the Covid-19 pandemic.

The HM Lord-Lieutenant said: “I am delighted to officially reopen the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery after its remarkable renovation that has created a formidable new focus for art, heritage and culture in Northamptonshire.

“This exciting development is absolutely wonderful for the city, county and wider region, and provides a place where visitors can immerse themselves in our fascinating local history and traditions while celebrating all the good things about Northampton.”

The Northampton Museum and Art Gallery also has an outdoor café and an expanded museum shop with a sales gallery that showcases works of art and crafts from Northamptonshire artists and manufacturers.

The museum and all exhibitions are free, the building is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 a.m. to 5 p.m.
