JACK BROOKS was officially reprimanded by Somerset for historical use of racist language, writes Rory Dollard.
The sailor has been investigated by the club for abusive tweets made in 2012, the year he left Northamptonshire for Yorkshire, and his use of the name “Steve” for his former White Rose teammate, Cheteshwar Pujara.
Brooks’ habit of not using Pujara’s first name against the Indian thug’s will was discussed by Azeem Rafiq during his testimony before the DCMS selection committee.
Somerset said, “The club has decided to reprimand Jack, reminding him of his responsibilities and requiring him to attend extensive training on equality, diversity and inclusivity.”
Somerset praised Brooks for his cooperation and remorse on the matter, but made it clear that his previous behavior did not meet the required standards.
“The club has spoken extensively with Jack about the nature and content of his comments. There is no doubt that these comments are unacceptable,” said a statement.
“Somerset CCC condemns the use of language that has racist connotations.
“Jack agrees and is embarrassed and devastated that his comments have offended people and has admitted that although the content of the posts was made almost a decade ago when he was less grown up, it was wrong and values inconsistent with his personality. ”
English bowler Tymal Mills, who received an offensive tweet from Brooks, said he accepted a personal apology.
“Jack and I talked about it and I know how much he regrets using his language,” said Mills.
“I believe it is right that, as a sport and as a society, we need to go through a thorough process of reflection and introspection about the language we speak and how we relate to one another.
“Jack apologized profusely and sincerely to me for what I accepted, and I still consider him a good friend.
Somerset also announced that Brooks and his partner had received “threatening messages on social media,” which were subsequently reported to authorities.
