Northampton’s new Five Guys is a hit – but watch out for one thing – Matthew Harris

Northampton’s new Five Guys is a hit – but if you enjoy one of its famous burgers, don’t forget one thing.

The popular American diner chain offers locals premium burgers, hot dogs, their signature fries, and even free peanuts.

Five Guys took over the site previously occupied by Frankie and Benny’s which closed. The company said that after 25 years, its Sixfields site had become “unviable for trade”.

Northampton’s new Five Guys Restaurant in Sixfields

My fiancee and I went to the new Five Guys to see if it matched the other chains I had been to.

The restaurant itself is relatively small at one floor and has a number of benches, stools and tables.

For those who haven’t been, the chain is known for its fresh, custom-made burgers that you can stuff with everything from onions and bacon to jalapenos and mushrooms.

I ordered the classic bacon cheeseburger – you can tell right away that it’s simply better than any other fast food joint in the area.

Incredibly flavorful, fresh beef on a sesame bun that doesn’t fall apart at the first sign of fat.

However, this is reflected in the price. A bacon cheeseburger here costs £9.45 – quadruple what you would pay at McDonald’s across the street – but in terms of quality and size it’s worth the few pounds more.

Portion size doesn’t just apply to the main event – the chip portions are gigantic and should definitely be shared between two people. If you’re ordering alone I’d recommend ordering a small one and even then expecting to have some leftovers.

What is so unique about their chips? According to Five Guys, they contain no trans fats or preservatives, and the skinless fries are cooked in peanut oil — some major differences from your standard chips.

For two burgers, large fries and a drink each the bill came to just over £30 – I’d say you’re generally paying at least £10-15 per person if you go here as the burgers aren’t cheap.

One thing to be aware of, however, is the location – the Five Guys is directly opposite Sixfields Stadium, home of Northampton Town FC.

Keep in mind that the surrounding streets get crowded with football fans from 2pm to 3pm and 5pm to 6pm most Saturdays, and stopping by for a weekend while the Cobblers play can mean quite a bit of traffic. Something to consider.

Overall I would highly recommend Northampton’s new Five Guys. Just make sure you’re willing to pay a little more than usual.

And for the participants of the Veganuary there are also veggie sandwiches on offer.
