Flood warning for Billing Aquadrome as rivers in Northamptonshire swell and 36 hours of rain ensue

Flood warnings apply to stretches of rivers in Northampton, Wellingborough and Kettering.

Environmental protection experts warned on Monday (December 27) that some back roads near the Nene between Cogenhoe and Wansford and the River Ise near Barton Seagrave are already under water.

The Nene stretch includes the Billing Aquadrome vacation rental park, where hundreds spent Christmas from their homes after they were evacuated.

But the emergency services don’t expect anything so serious this time around, despite the Met Office’s predictions of more heavy rain in the area.

An environmental agency spokesman said: “In the past few days we have seen heavy rainfall in the Middle Nene area, the River Ise and tributaries between Clipston and Wellingborough and Alledge Brook between Grafton Underwood and Thrapston.

“This means that the Nene and its tributaries have risen and remain high, which has flooded low-lying land and roads near the river.

“More rain is forecast for the next few days and we expect the river to remain high, but our predictions indicate that property flooding is unlikely and therefore flood warnings are not issued.

“We constantly monitor river levels and have employees on site who check for blockages and remove weed protection grids.

“Please avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers that can be flooded.

“Please don’t try to drive through high water.”

A similar flood alarm – the lowest level in the environmental agency’s warning system – applies to an area around the River Tove from Towcester to Cosgrove in the south of the county.

The Met Ofice forecasts promise rain for around 36 hours from midnight on Monday night.
