Northamptonshire born Maisie Summers-Newton wins 2 Paralympic gold medals

Northamptonshire born swimmer Maisie Summers-Newton won two gold medals at the Tokyo Paralympics.

The county-born athlete, who grew up in Wollaston and trained at the Northampton Swimming Club, won the gold medal in the SB6 100-meter breaststroke on Saturday, setting a Paralympic record. She managed a time of 1 minute 32.34 seconds and led the Chinese home athlete Liu Daomin, who holds the current world record for the event.

This contributed to her victory in the SB6 200m singles situation earlier this week, which she achieved on Thursday, setting a world record for the event. In this case, she came from an early disadvantage to lead Yelyzaveta Mereshko home from Ukraine. In doing so, Summers-Newton set a time of 2 minutes 56.68 seconds, with her breaststroke being seen as the part of the race that brought her to the top.

At both events, Summers-Newton competed against her personal idol and colleague Ellie Simmonds, who previously won five gold medals and a total of eight gold medals at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 events, despite being unable to match her total at those events raise .

The 19-year-old Summers-Newton takes part in her first Paralympics and in her career she won gold at the World Para Swimming Championships in the 200m individual medley in London in 2019 and before that at a European Championship in Dublin year.
