When driving south from Southampton I don’t feel particularly inspired to book a vacation here. Along the coast, chimneys rise into the air like huge cigarettes, blowing ominous clouds of steam. Industrial buildings on the horizon obscure my view of the sea. And in the distant docks I can see mammoth container ships being unloaded by cranes. This is not an English idyll.
Until housing estates give way to the forest and a small winding country road leads me to a farm road crisscrossed by scurrying pheasants, past fields of golden grass and reeds, to the pretty two-story house by the Drummonds Sea.
